Superstorms Fuzhou

September 19 10:30 Beijing time.

Reporting from Xiamen.

Typhoon Fanapi is but hours away from landfall....now its sunny with a few clouds over head, and gentle sea breezes.

From the satellite imagery it is seen that Fanapi is a tightly packed small typhoon. So I would forecast Fanapi to be hitting south Fujian rather suddenly - that is without much pre-empt of a storm coming.

South Fujian Cities - Fuzhou, Quanzhou, Xiamen, Putian, and Ruijing.

Experts have indicated that it may remain strong after its landfall at Taiwan, and turn a little southward because of that landfall.

This is something worth noting for the residents of south Fujian as they can expect a level 2 storm at their doorsteps this evening.

Will report more as the storm nears.

10:30pm same day.....

Over previous 12 hours....

Wind gusts peaked to 12.4mph and highest steady wind speed over 30 minute period was 6.2mph.

Around 7:30pm drizzle lasting 1 hour, then dissipated.

Storm looks to be missing Xiamen.

8:30 am next morning.....

Storm started picking up around 5am.

Got kitted up grabbed digital camera and headed down (on foot) to the sea side.

Wind speeds then were 15 to 21 mph steady (constant), and gusts up to 35 mph at half minute intervals.

Was a rough walk to the beach, approx. two and a half miles away from my home.

Trees breaking, iron sheets peeling off signs and buckling at wild speeds down the street, street rubbish containers being ripped out of the ground by sudden wind gusts, and more....Some parts of my walk were quite dangerous.

Got to the seaside a little worse for wear and encountered a couple of photographers there snapping pics (as I was about to do but for different purposes).

The sea swells would often overflow onto the grass verge showering all there in sea water.

Now.....8:30, wind speeds have dropped and have occasional gusts between 5 and 10 mph.

Light showers now, no flooding to report from the area that I covered (Ruijing and Qianpu districts of Xiamen), and a massive city clean up will be starting in coming few hours.

I will be posting the pics taken of my trek to the seaside here in a couple hours....Firstly I need some coffee and rest...feeling quite exhausted in a happy sort of way :)

Pics have been posted....
